Organizers of the Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge have revealed the three challenges competitors will address during the event later this month. Topics include the state's infant mortality rate, data management and medication. July 3, 2013

News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Organizers today announced the three 2013 Challenges and healthcare organizations that will present at the 2nd Annual Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge (HHIC), sponsored by Develop Indy, TechPoint, and Ice Miller, on July 12th in Indianapolis. Teams that submit winning challenge solutions will be eligible to win over $25,000 in cash prizes and in-kind services.

“The Challenges we are going to see this year are representative of patient-focused challenges as well as IT-based challenges facing the healthcare industry,” said Matt Kirby, Director of Business Attraction and Development for Develop Indy, a business unit of the Indy Chamber. “The Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge provides tech entrepreneurs and developers unprecedented access to some of the leading healthcare organizations in the country and is creating opportunities to work together to solve real-world problems.”

Challenges to be presented at the 2013 HHIC include:

-Challenge #1: Pregnancy Application – Submitted by the Indiana State Department of Health – Reduce the state's infant mortality rate by delivering important educational information to expectant mothers.

-Challenge 2: Health Exchange Data Management – Submitted by the Indiana Health Information Exchange and Indiana Health Information Technology, Inc. – Reduce the duplication of messages created by the delivery of multiple 'Continuity of Care Documents.'

-Challenge 3: Medication Reconciliation – Submitted by Indiana Health Information Technology Inc. – Monitor medication across multiple inpatient and outpatient encounters and providers for the purpose of reducing medication care gaps.

In addition to the chance to solve the Challenges, attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in an informational session on wearable devices and their potential impact on healthcare. The event's lunch session will be keynoted by national health IT speaker and author Dr. Lyle Berkowitz with Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

The 2013 HHIC will be followed by the Hoosier Code 4 Health, Indiana's first health-focused code-a-thon, during the weekend of July 13th and 14th. Coders and developers will have the opportunity to analyze large data sets, receive input from industry experts, pitch solutions, and win cash prizes and in-kind services valued at over $5,000.

“Indy's tech community is uniquely positioned to help solve many of the problems healthcare professionals face providing quality care and delivering better outcomes for patients,” said Mike Langellier, president and CEO of TechPoint. “The Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge and Hoosier Code 4 Health events offer a venue for clinicians and tech experts to come together with a common purpose of solving real healthcare challenges that will ultimately improve patient care, reduce costs, and solidify Indiana's standing as a premiere location for health IT innovation.”

The Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge will be held Friday, July 12th at Hine Hall on the campus of IUPUI. The Hoosier Code 4 Health will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 13th and 14th, at the Lilly COI Center in Intech Park.
