(NYSE: TEN) will lay off about 350 employees over the next year in what a company spokesperson calls a “difficult, but necessary decision.”
The plant, located at 3605 W. Cleveland Road in South Bend, was taken over by Tenneco two years ago after the company’s acquisition of Federal Mogul, according to the South Bend Tribune.
Tenneco spokesperson Steve Blow tells Inside INdiana Business the company decided to move manufacturing to other plans around the world, while keeping assembly work in South Bend. He says the decision was made to “remain competitive and profitable in the challenging global environment for this business.”
“This decision is not a reflection of the committed team members in South Bend, but was necessary to remain cost-competitive in a challenging global business and will allow us continue the assembly work in South Bend,” said Blow.
Blow says the affected employees will have the opportunity to apply for openings at Tenneco plants in Elkhart and Ligonier.
“We are working diligently to create a competitive package for affected workers that will include severance, job training and assistance in transitioning to new jobs or new career opportunities,” Blow added.
Tenneco also has manufacturing facilities in Frankfort and Jeffersonville.
