The University of Notre Dame Board of Trustees has elected Rev. John Jenkins to another five-year term as president of the University.

Jenkins was first elected in 2005. He’s the 17th Holy Cross priest to serve in that role of the 176-year-old school.

Jenkins’ fourth term will begin immediately following the end of his current term on June 30, 2020.

“Like the 16 Holy Cross priests before him, Father Jenkins has led the University of Notre Dame with ultimate distinction,” said John Brennan, chairman of the university’s board of trustees. “His insight, wisdom and steady hand have allowed Notre Dame to expand its research portfolio, grow globally and continue to provide an undergraduate education of the first rank, all in concert with our Catholic mission.”

While at the helm, the university completed the largest construction project in its history with the opening of the 770,000-square-foot Campus Crossroads Project.

The $400 million projected included the construction of three buildings that are adjacent to Notre Dame’s football stadium. The building includes classrooms, research facilities, and hospitality suites.

In 2011, Jenkins was elected to the board of directors for the Commission on Presidential Debates, an organization that sponsors and produces all U.S. presidential and vice-presidential debates.

On Friday, the university was notified that it was selected to host the first debate in the 2020 election series. It will take place on Sept. 29, 2020, (Tuesday) in the Purcell Pavilion of the Joyce Center.
