As Election Looms, Economic Development Director Resigns
PORTAGE - With municipal elections just three months away, Portage Economic Development Director Andy Maletta is leaving the post to take a job with Merrillville-based North Shore Health Systems. “With an election, you just never know what is going to change,” Maletta told our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana.
The economic development director position is appointed. Maletta said with an election in November, there’s no guarantee he’d be reappointed. The paper says Maletta ran and lost for a Portage City Council position.
Portage Mayor John Cannon announced Maletta’s departure last week, saying he understands Maletta's decision. “Andy’s done a marvelous job in his role and he’s certainly going to be missed,” said Cannon.
The Times says Maletta was appointed as the city’s first economic director ins January 2016 where he has overseen programs to promote job growth and encourage companies to build in Portage. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done,” said Maletta.
The publication says Maletta’s last day on the job is Wednesday.
