Governor Eric Holcomb has selected Dennis Wimer as director of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. Wimer succeeds Jim Brown, who resigned last month amid allegations of misappropriating funds from the Military Family Relief Fund.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Wimer is the owner and chief executive officer of LADS Consulting LLC. He previously served as associate chief operating officer for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

"I have directed Dennis to make any and all necessary changes to restore the confidence of the department and the trust of Hoosier veterans," Holcomb said in a news release. "Dennis is a strong leader with a passion to serve. His experience and expertise, which combines military service with a deep knowledge of the inner workings of state and federal programs, have prepared him to transform the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs."

Brown submitted his resignation following an investigation by the Indianapolis Star, which reported department employees received more than the $2,500 cap for assistance, and also received the money more quickly than veterans applying for the same funding.

Wimer will begin his new role January 28.
