GARY - The new East Corporate Hangar at the Gary/Chicago International Airport has landed a major tenant. The airport has approved a 10-year lease with Valparaiso-based Sage-Popovich to occupy the $1.3 million hangar, which is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2019.

The Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority Board says the lease includes two five-year extensions. Sage-Popovich, which has had a presence at the airport for more than 20 years, provides commercial aircraft repossession, fleet management, and charter flight services, among others, according to its website.

"The entire Sage-Popovich flight department is thrilled to enter this new phase of our expansion with a new home at the Gary/Chicago International Airport," Nick Popovich, president of Sage-Popovich, said in a news release. "It has been amazing to see the growth of the airport over the past two decades and we are happy to be just a small part of that amazing transformation. We are looking forward to continuing the long-standing relationship with the airport and the two FBOs on the field."

The airport announced plans for the new hangar in March and construction began in the summer. Last month, the airport also officially opened its new U.S. Customers and Border Protection facility, which allows the airport to receive international flights.
