Construction Begins on IU Health Cancer Center
CARMEL - Indiana University Health North Hospital in Carmel has broken ground on the IU Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center. The health system says the $55 million project will bring the hospital's cancer services all under one roof.
The cancer center will include radiation oncology, hematology-oncology, pharmacy, laboratory, and patient navigation services. The IU Health Board of Directors approved funding for the project in December. The facility is expected to open in January 2020.
"Through this investment, IU Health is improving access to care for patients, and bringing treatment closer to home for those living on the north side of Indianapolis and beyond," says Alicia Schulhof, president of the IU Health North Suburban Area. "By creating a new, convenient location for patients to access cancer care rooted in cutting edge research, education and innovation, IU Health North Hospital is extending the reach of the most respected cancer program in the state of Indiana."
The facility is being named after Joe & Shelly Schwarz following Shelly Schwarz' $10 million gift to the project in honor of her husband, who passed away in March after his second battle with cancer. IU Health says the donation is the largest single gift from a living donor in the health system's history.
