CROWN POINT - Franciscan Health Crown Point has received a major certification. The American College of Surgeons has designated the hospital as a Level 3 Trauma Center, the 12th of its kind in the state.

The health system says the certification is for three years and follows an in-depth review process, which included two on-site visits. Eric Woo, a surgeon at the hospital that led the program to earn the designation, says the hospital had to meet criteria to prove it could provide swift, excellent care to trauma and injured patients.

"Surgeons have to be able to respond quickly when a trauma patient arrives at Franciscan Health Crown Point and they have to maintain specified training and education related to trauma care," said Woo. "This achievement is a direct result of hard work and dedication by the nurses, staff and doctors at Franciscan Crown Point. This has, and will continue, to improve the care of Hoosiers in Northwest Indiana."

Surgeons in various categories of general surgery, including orthopedics, radiology, emergency medicine, neurosurgery and critical care, had to make commitments in order for the hospital to become a Level 3 Trauma Center. The certification also requires the hospital to offer services such as child car seat safety, fall prevention for seniors and a Safe Kids Day event highlighting child prevention topics.
