ROCKPORT - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded nearly $224,000 to the Rockport Housing Authority in Spencer County. The funds will be used toward addressing emergency, safety and security needs at public housing properties.

The Rockport Housing Authority has earmarked its $223,543 award for the purchase of security camera systems, fencing, alarm systems, lighting and doors in order to improve security and monitoring. The equipment will be installed at the 5th Street High Rise, Washington St. Apartments, and the JFK Complex in Rockport.

The funding is part HUD's Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program, which has awarded $5 million to 25 agencies in 15 states.

"Everyone should feel safe in their home," HUD Secretary Ben Carson said in a news release. "This funding will allow public housing authorities to put in place additional safety measures that provide greater security and protection for residents."
