An Indiana-based health system is ranked among the 15 Top Health Systems in the country. The rankings were determined by a study conducted by Michigan-based Truven Health Analytics, which measures factors such as mortality rates, average length of stay and readmission rates.

Fort Wayne-based Parkview Health is the only Indiana representative on the list, which splits the winners into three categories: Large, medium and small health systems. The list is based on the methodology for Truven Health Analytics' Top 100 Hospitals list, on which Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne was included this year.

Parkview is included in the medium health system category. The study says the five winning health systems in that category achieved the following marks compared to their non-winning peers:

  • 21.6 percent shorter wait times in the emergency department
  • 18.3 percent fewer in-hospital deaths
  • 10.6 percent shorter length of hospital stays
  • 4.9 percent fewer complications

"When you drill down into the details of this recognition and see that we’re actually one of the top five health systems within our category based on our size, it’s quite the honor to be recognized among the nation’s elite," said Mike Packnett, chief executive officer of Parkview Health. "It’s also rewarding to see our 11,000 plus co-workers, physicians and providers recognized for their world-class teamwork and commitment to excellence, innovation and high-quality care and services."
