Indianapolis-based Schmidt Associates Architects has named Sarah Hempstead chief executive officer. She is only the second CEO and president in the firm’s 40-year history. Firm founder and President Wayne Schmidt stepped down as CEO this month from the architecture, design and engineering firm he created in 1976. He will remain chairman of the board and the principal-in-charge of the Community Studio. Schmidt Associates was one of the early Indianapolis downtown pioneers when it located its company headquarters at 415 Massachusetts Ave. Hempstead joined Schmidt in 2001. She is now responsible for the company’s extensive Higher Education Studio and overall management of the firm. She is a graduate of Ball State University, with dual degrees in environmental design and architecture. Hempstead also attended the University of Volgograd studying architecture and engineering.
