IPL to Cut Ribbon on Energy Storage Facility
Indianapolis Power & Light Co. is set to cut the ribbon Tuesday on its new battery-based energy storage system. The Advancion Energy Storage Array, located at IPL's Harding Street Generation Station, uses lithium-ion batteries to connect to the grid.
IPL says the system can instantly match supply and demand for electricity, which gives grid operators the ability to store excess electricity. That extra electricity could be used periods of high power demand. The utility says the system can also balance intermittent resources, including wind and solar energy.
The ribbon cutting is scheduled to take place at 10:00 a.m. It will feature representatives from IPL and its parent, The AES Corp. (NYSE; AES).
