PLAINFIELD - Governor Mike Pence will ceremonially sign the bill that establishes the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship Thursday morning. The governor will be joined by House Speaker Brian Bosma, who authored the bill, at Plainfield High School.

The bill provides eligible candidates up to $7,500 in scholarships per academic year, as long as the students commit to teaching in Indiana for at least five years. The goal of the bill was to not only encourage students to pursue a career in education in Indiana, but also keep prospective teachers in the state.

"It's my hope that (the bill) sends the message that we honor and value our teaching professionals and we want to honor and value them in the future," Bosma said prior to the House vote on the bill.

Pence officially signed the bill into law last month, along with the bills eliminating the ISTEP exam and establishing the Career Pathways and Mentorship Program.
