Mayor Withdraws Plan to Move Iconic Statue
The mayor of Fort Wayne has pulled the plug on a proposal to relocate one of the city's best-known landmarks. Tom Henry's plan to move the General Anthony Wayne statue from its current location at a city park to the Allen County Courthouse was set to be taken up Thursday by the Board of Park Commissioners. Instead, as our partners at 21Alive WPTA report, the statue will stay where it is and receive some upgrades. The new plan calls for the Allen County Courthouse Preservation Trust Inc. to pump $100,000 into landscaping, new lighting and some restoration to the landmark.
The organization was against the move, saying it would take away from the Courthouse Green's beauty.
21Alive reports all the work will be privately funded.
At this point, no starting or completion date has been announced.
