IU Health Promotes Senior VP
Erin Lewis has been promoted to senior vice president and general counsel at Indiana University Health. Lewis had been vice president and deputy general counsel. She joined IU Health as an associate general counsel in 2012. IU VP Elected to Hague Academy
Indiana University vice president for international affairs, Hannah Buxbaum, has been elected to the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law. The Hague Academy was founded in 1923 as a center for high-level education and determines the scientific policies and activities of the academy, designs its programs and chooses lecturers. Buxbaum joins 17 international scholars on the Curatorium.

Governor Eric Holcomb has appointed Magistrate Jennifer DeGroote to the Allen County Superior Court. She will succeed Judge Stanley Levine. DeGroote has served as a magistrate judge for the Allen County Superior Courts since 1999. Also, Magistrate Thomas Hallett has been appointed to the Lake County Superior Court. He succeeds Judge Elizabeth Tavitas. Hallett currently serves as a magistrate judge for the Lake County Superior Courts in the civil division in Gary.

Governor Eric Holcomb has made three appointments to the Marion County Superior Courts. Charnette Garner (pictured), Jennifer Harrison (pictured) and Mark Jones will be sworn in on or after January 1, according to Holcomb's office. Barnes & Thornburg Partner Chosen as Federal Judge
President Donald Trump has tapped a partner at Indianapolis-based law firm Barnes & Thornburg LLP to become a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. If confirmed, Damon Leichty from the firm's South Bend office will fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Robert Miller. Barnes & Thornburg says Leichty clerked for Miller early in his career.
Carmel Law Firm Hires Associates
Carmel-based Applegate Elder Law has added Ann Smith as an associate attorney. Judge Tavitas Appointed to Appeals Court Bench
Lake County Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Tavitas has been selected by Governor Eric Holcomb to serve on the Indiana Court of Appeals. She will succeed Judge Michael Barnes, who retired last month after 18 years on the bench. Tavitas joined the Lake County Superior Court in 2006 following an appointment by then-Governor Mitch Daniels. Tavitas said "I'm humbled by the opportunity to serve the State of Indiana on the Court of Appeals.

Pryor Assumes Duties as U.S. Magistrate Judge
Doris Pryor has started her duties as United States Magistrate Judge. Judge Pryor fills the vacancy created by the untimely death of Magistrate Judge Denise K. LaRue, who passed away on August 2, 2017. Judge Pryor previously served as national security chief for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana and served in that role from September 2014 until last month.

A well-known trial attorney in Indianapolis has joined law firm SmithAmundsen LLC. The firm says Linda Pence will be a litigation partner and will lead its national white collar crime group. She is a former trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice and recently closed her own firm, PenceHensel LLC. Pence has more than 40 years of experience with criminal, civil and regulatory matters.
Trump Nominates Sweeney For Federal Judicial Post
President Donald Trump has nominated Barnes & Thornburg Partner James Sweeney II for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. If confirmed, the attorney and retired Marine Corps colonel and combat veteran, will serve as a district judge, filling the vacancy created when the Honorable Sarah Evans Barker took senior judge status.

Barrett McNagny LLP has hired F. Italia Patti and Scott Campbell. Patti will concentrate her practice in the area of litigation. She graduated from the University of Chicago Law School with honors, where she was a member of The University of Chicago Law Review. Holcomb Announces Judicial Appointments
Governor Eric Holcomb has made three judicial appointments: David Najjar to Hamilton County Superior Court No. 5, Jeffrey Clymer (pictured) to Porter County Superior Court No. 2 and Sean Persin (pictured) to Tippecanoe County Circuit Court. Najjar succeeds Judge Wayne Sturtevant, who retired in August. Clymer succeeds Judge William Alexa, who retired earlier this month October. Persin will succeed Judge Thomas Busch, who is retiring December 31.

Ross Vandegriff has joined Evansville-based Reminger Co. LPA. He focuses his practice on the representation of businesses, government and public entities, insurance companies, and third-party insureds in the areas of negligence, tort law, contract coverage, bad faith, and worker’s compensation. Vandegriff previously worked as in-house counsel for a Fortune 500 insurance company.

Barnes & Thornburg Names Merkel COO
Barnes & Thornburg LLP has named Steven Merkel chief operating officer. He is a retired U.S. Army colonel who joins the firm after serving as chief of operations for the United States Military Academy. Earlier operational roles held by Merkel include brigade commander at the U.S. Military Academy; chief of operations for a multinational security force in Kabul, Afghanistan and chief of operations for the U.S First Army.

State Bar Names Executive Director
The Indiana State Bar Association has selected Joe Skeel as its next executive director. He currently serves as executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists. Skeel will succeed Thomas Pyrz, who will retire in January. A Johnson County native, Skeel joined the SPJ in 2004 as editor of its member magazine, Quill.
