Warsaw-based Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc. (NYSE: ZBH) has joined the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants program. The move means the company is committing to reducing energy intensity by 25 percent over the next 10 years.

The medical device manufacturer’s participation in the program also includes a water-reduction component.

Zimmer Biomet in 2015 announced a goal to reduce its carbon footprint by 20 percent by 2020. Senior Vice President of Global Operations and Logistics Adrian Furey says joining the DOE program "will help us reach that goal and continue to reduce energy intensity over the long term."

Nearly 3,000 facilities are participating the the Better Buildings, Better Plants program. That footprint represents about 12 percent of U.S. manufacturing energy. The effort involves implementing strategies for reducing energy intensity including sourcing renewable energy, upgrading to LED technologies and using highly-efficient motors.
