The Whiting Redevelopment Commission will consider approval next month of a plan to bring the National Mascot Hall of Fame to the city's downtown. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report Mayor Joseph Stahura believes ground could be broken on the $8 million building before next summer. The commission will decide on the approval of a memorandum of understanding stating the hall would locate to Whiting if the city builds the facility and raises funding for exhibits. Money for exhibits is expected to total $4 million to $5 million.

Stahura says the bulk of the funding is already lined up. He believes the hall is a key to making the northwest Indiana city a destination that will boost its national profile and increase economic development.

The hall, started by the man who played the original Philadelphia Phillies “Phillie Phanatic” mascot, does not currently have a brick-and-mortar location.
