Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc. (NYSE: WLP) has named Jose Tomas executive vice president and chief resources officer. He had been serving as president for Latin America and the Caribbean at Burger King Corp. November 11, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS — Nov. 11, 2013– WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP) announced today that Jose Tomas has been named executive vice president and chief human resources officer, effective December 2, 2013. Tomas replaces Randy Brown who announced earlier this year that he would retire at the end of December. In this role, Tomas will focus on attracting, developing and retaining talent across the company, compensation and benefits, workforce development, diversity management and associate engagement. Additionally, he will play a vital role in helping WellPoint foster a unified and inclusive culture, further positioning the company for success in this rapidly changing health care environment.

Prior to joining WellPoint, Tomas served as Global Chief People Officer and President, Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) for Burger King Corporation (BKC) where he was responsible for the company’s global human resources and communications functions and simultaneously led all operations, marketing, business development, purchasing, supply and distribution functions for the LAC region. Prior to joining BKC in 2004, Tomas held various field and corporate human resources positions with Ryder System Inc. and Publix Super Markets.

Tomas holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's in management from Florida International University. He is certified by the Human Resources Certification Institute as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), and currently serves as a board member for the Society for Human Resource Management.
