Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc. (NYSE: WLP) has named Tom Miller chief information officer. He most recently served in a similar position with Coca-Cola Refreshments.

Indianapolis, Ind. — WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP) announced today that Thomas Miller has been named chief information officer, effective May 1. In this role, Miller will be responsible for all enterprise-wide Information Technology initiatives with the focus on delivering high quality, secure, compliant and cost effective technologies that enhance WellPoint business capabilities.

It shapes the way we interact with our customers, it allows us to analyze big data in ways we never have before, and it provides us the opportunity to create innovative tools that will help our provider partners make the best health care decisions for their patients. Tom's in-depth experience in multiple disciplines, including business operations, and his more than 15 years in information technology leadership will allow WellPoint to harness the technologies that are available today, and plan for the groundbreaking technologies of the future,” said Gloria McCarthy, WellPoint’s chief administrative officer.

Prior to joining WellPoint, Miller served as senior vice president and chief information officer for Coca Cola Refreshments, where he lead the information technology function and a team of 1000 IT professionals. He also served in the concurrent role as CIO for the Coca Cola's North America Group with responsibility for consumer-facing technologies in the areas of digital marketing, social media and loyalty programs. Since joining Coca Cola in 1982, he has held multiple leadership positions including, General Manager, Program Scale & Vice President, Bottling Investments, Vice President, Business Information Systems Operations and Chief Information Officer for the Europe, Eurasia & Middle East Group.

Miller holds a bachelor's degree in business management from Northwood University in Midland, Michigan, and a MBA from Goizueta Business School, Emory University. He is a charter board member and steering committee member of SAP’s Global Consumer Products Industry Advisory Council (CPAC), a charter board member of the Alliance for Freedom, Restoration and Justice, a 501(c)3 organization devoted to combating human trafficking; and was honored in 2010 as a Top Ten Visionary Leader by Consumer Goods Technology magazine.
