Additional cuts are planned at U.S. Steel Corp. (NYSE: X) in northwest Indiana. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the company has given permanent layoff notices to more than 80 probationary workers at the Gary Works operation. The announcement comes on the heels of last week's word that it plans to shut down the coke-making plant at Gary in May. That move would affect 300 employees.

The Times reports U.S. Steel has eliminated more than 780 jobs in the region this year.

Northwest Indiana is not alone. The publication says the company has also reduced its work force in other states including Ohio, Texas, Minnesota, Illinois and Alabama.
