Indianapolis, Ind. — One of the largest graduating classes in University of Indianapolis history will receive diplomas Saturday in an outdoor commencement ceremony that also will include the announcement of a multimillion-dollar donation from a local civic leader and philanthropist.
Nearly 1,400 students – 927 undergraduates, 385 master’s candidates and 84 doctoral candidates – are projected to complete their degrees this year and are eligible to participate in the 11 a.m. home campus ceremony at Key Stadium. They hail from 25 U.S. states and 24 nations, with international students comprising 13 percent of the total. An additional 98 students are expected to graduate separately from UIndy’s international partnership sites.
Acclaimed author and MacArthur Fellowship winner Edwidge Danticat, author of the Oprah’s Book Club selection Breath, Eyes, Memory and other works inspired by her Haitian homeland, will deliver a reading and receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree during the ceremony.
Also speaking will be students Emily Bielefeld of Westfield, representing undergraduates, and Brandon White of Sellersburg, representing graduate students. Bielefeld is double-majoring in Information Systems and Operations & Supply Chain Management and will begin work in June with Eli Lilly & Co. White, who is receiving a master’s degree in International Relations, will undertake his second congressional internship this summer in Washington, D.C., on his way to a career in foreign affairs or defense policy.
University President Robert Manuel will announce the gift and honor the donor onstage during his initial remarks at the ceremony.
