INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis expects a record number of full-time undergraduates for the 11th-straight year as the campus prepares for freshman Move-In Day on Wednesday and the start of classes on Aug. 26.

Those students will benefit from new and restructured programs as UIndy implements ideas generated during a year of strategic planning launched by President Robert Manuel.

Full-time day undergrads – the “traditional” college student – are expected to total 3,050 for the fall semester, which will bring an estimated 810 freshmen and 220 transfer students to campus. Graduate, evening and part-time students will take total 2013-2014 enrollment to around 5,300, though official figures will not be available until September.

Hailing from 15 states and 16 nations, the freshman class of Greyhounds boasts an average high school GPA of 3.45 and includes 16 valedictorians and 5 salutatorians. Popular majors among new students include health-related programs such as Nursing, Pre-Physical Therapy, Exercise Science, Athletic Training, Pre-Med and Biology, as well as Communication, Business and Sport Management.


Student advising

Student advising functions, previously housed in individual academic departments, have been consolidated into a campuswide Center for Advising and Student Achievement. CASA will help each student develop an individualized program of courses and extracurricular activities – a Greyhound Plan – to match his or her interests and goals.

Career support

UIndy’s new Professional Edge Center will combine Career Services, Alumni Relations and Community Programs (service-learning and volunteer opportunities) into a single department that prepares students for the working world and helps alumni to advance their careers and mentor new graduates.

Student-run agencies

In the tradition of the national award-winning Top Dog Communication, UIndy's student-run PR agency, other departments across campus are launching student-run creative agencies to provide free services to local nonprofit groups and real-world experience for students. They include One14 Design Studio in the Department of Art & Design and similar ventures in the Department of Theatre and the interdisciplinary Experience Design program.

New academic programs in sustainability and business

Environmental Sustainability is a new interdisciplinary major/minor that combines courses in Biology, Anthropology, International Relations, English and other subject areas to prepare graduates for careers in public policy, private industry or nonprofit work related to sustainability in energy, climate, food and water.

Also, UIndy's new one-year, full-time MBA is the only one in the Indianapolis area, ideal for fresh graduates seeking to boost their marketability with just one additional year of study, international students seeking an efficient route to a U.S. business credential, and graduates in fields such as arts or health care who plan to start their own businesses.
