There’s More to Colts Coach Frank Reich Than Football
Frank Reich is bringing more than just football experience to his new role as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. The man who most recently served as offensive coordinator for last season’s Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles and quarterbacked the 1992 Buffalo Bills to the biggest comeback in NFL Playoff history also has entrepreneurial chops. Reich, who also spent years in ministry between the end of his playing career and entering the professional coaching ranks, has started multiple businesses with partners including his father and former Cincinnati Bengals star Boomer Esiason.
In the first part of a two-part interview with Inside INdiana Sports host Bill Benner, Reich talked about his leadership style. "Since I played in this game for a long time, I’m just like the players — just obsessed with getting better and winning. Understanding that this has got to be done together. There’s no one player that’s bigger than the team," he said. "Ultimately, in this game, the most fun comes when you win." Reich also currently owns a physical therapy business in North Carolina, which he says continues to do "very well." His previous ventures involved patented autographed football holders designed by his father and a chain of boot shops with Esiason, his college roommate and best man when he got married.
Reich’s first coaching gig in the NFL came as an intern on Tony Dungy’s staff in Indianapolis. He worked with several other teams before getting the nod this offseason as Colts head coach when Josh McDaniels accepted then turned down the job. "I’ve learned in this coaching business that: never go chasing after jobs. Just do the best job where you are."
