The media technology company has had a presence in Vigo County for 35 years and in January, announced it would be outsourcing music and movie disc production. The decision was based on reduced demand as consumers continue to shift to digital means of media consumption. Some 375 employees — more than half the Sony DADC workforce in Terre Haute — lost their jobs.
In a letter to the city council, Sony DADC said the company, which first began operations in the Wabash Valley in 1983, has always met conditions of tax incentives throughout the years until now. Over the years, Sony DADC estimates it has had a $5 billion economic impact on Terre Haute through payrolls, use of local suppliers and taxes paid. Laserdiscs, compact discs, DVDs, Blue-Ray discs and UHD discs have all been produced at the facility. The remaining work, currently performed by around 300, involves production of physical media for Sony Playstation products.
In the filing with the city, the company adds it is "unlikely that our headcount will increase during the remaining years of the current abatements."
