Services Set For Howard Caldwell

Services are set for a well-known and long-serving former Indianapolis television newsman and author. Howard Caldwell, who was as an anchor and reporter at WRTV 6 for nearly 40 years, will be remembered during a visitation Thursday and a funeral Friday at Castleton United Methodist Church. Caldwell was 92.

His news career began as a member of the military during the Korean War when he was editor of a Naval Reserve newsletter. Caldwell was also stationed aboard a minesweeper and served as a radio reported during World War II. He returned to civilian life, receiving a bachelor’s degree from Butler University in 1950. After graduation, he served as a news manager for WTHI radio and TV in Terre Haute in the mid-1950s. In 1959, he joined the staff of WFBM-TV in Indianapolis, which later became WRTV. The Indianapolis native retired in the late-1990s as senior anchor at the station.

Caldwell, an Indianapolis native and Irvington High School graduate held a master’s in political science from Butler and is a member of the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame. He wrote two books: "Indianapolis" and "Hinkle," a biography of legendary Butler coach Tony Hinkle.
