INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In October, 2014 the Central Indiana Senior Fund board awarded 34 grants totaling $693,506 to local organizations for projects that support the community's elders as part of the Fund’s annual grants. The board specifically sought to fund organizations that improve lives of seniors in isolation and that have a low-to-moderate income.
A committee of ten advisors reviewed each grant request to determine which projects best align with one or more of the fund’s specific interest areas:
-Basic needs – food, transportation and shelter;
-Health and wellness – illness prevention and overall wellness;
-Living environment of choice – affordable housing, home care and safety;
-Life-affirming opportunity – programs that utilize talents and increase social interactions among seniors in Central Indiana.
“It's concerning that many senior citizens in Central Indiana cannot even satisfy their most basic needs,” said Patricia Prosser, chair of Central Indiana Senior Fund. “This fund supports projects that promote a higher quality of life for our aging neighbors so that they can live full, active lives.”
The Central Indiana Senior Fund was created in 2003 when a not-for-profit nursing home was sold for $10 million and profits from the sale were placed in an endowed fund at Central Indiana Community Foundation. The Smith Fund and The Lynn Fund also contribute to Senior Fund.
