Senate to Take on Marriage Amendment

A proposed constitutional amendment that would further define marriage is set to be heard today by the Senate Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee. The measure cleared the House last month after language involving domestic partner benefits and civil unions was removed. The vote could still go before Hoosier voters in November if the language relating to civil unions and domestic partner benefits is restored by the Senate and then passed by the House.

If both chambers approve the revised version during the second half of the current session, a referendum is unlikely until 2016.

HJR-3 opponents say it could stifle job-attraction efforts, while supporters are pushing for the issue to be put to the voters of Indiana.
