Subscribe NowSouth Bend Cubs owner Andrew Berlin is proposing a major housing and retail development outside Four Winds Field. Berlin plans to foot most of the more than $21 million bill. The city’s redevelopment commission is slated to have a look Thursday at the plans.
Renderings call for some 120 apartments and retail space in four buildings that would connect to each other. Some Berlin Flats units would overlook the playing field.
The project would be constructed on empty parcels outside the downtown South Bend stadium by Indianapolis-based TWG Development LLC. Plans filed with the city show Berlin’s Heading for Home LLC will pump $18 million into the mixed-use development, with the remaining $3.4 million coming from the city through funding from tax increment financing. A development agreement shows company will exercise its option to purchase the lot adjacent to the stadium where Berlin Flats will go.
The South Bend Tribune reports ground could be broken soon on the project construction could be complete in early 2018.
