HAMMOND, Ind. – Tracking medications, tracking fitness goals, and getting home repairs done will all be easier thanks to new businesses created at Northwest Indiana's first Startup Weekend, (http://nwindiana.startupweekend.org), held April 25-27 at Purdue University Calumet.
Working feverishly between Friday evening and Sunday evening, 21 participants identified customers and developed prototype products in three businesses. They were supported by eight mentors including Corey Smith, Chief Vision Officer for Tribute Media and Startup Weekend Facilitator. Smith travelled from Boise, Idaho, to oversee the event.
“The chance to take an idea from inception to a minimum viable product in a single weekend is amazing,” Smith said. “These three teams have an opportunity to further build their businesses from this weekend’s hard work.”
“Minimum viable product” refers to an early prototype that demonstrates the potential functionality of a product in order to determine customer interest.
“Activities like Startup Weekend showcase the talent we have in Northwest Indiana,” said Kelly Schwedland, volunteer organizer. “It is part of a wider effort to improve the region's entrepreneurial ecosystem.”
The weekend included a competition won by PillSched which is developing an app to help people manage prescriptions for themselves or others in their care. Ginny Angert, founder, developed the original idea based on her work as a nurse practitioner.
“Startup Weekend offered me an opportunity to find other people who brought exciting perspectives to my idea.” Angert said. “Over the weekend, the mentors and our team helped develop my idea into something that was far more than I had originally expected.”
Primary sponsors include Elevate Ventures, Purdue University Calumet, Purdue Research Park, Catch 22, Beggars Pizza, Strack and Van Til, Dunkin Donuts, Google and Amazon Web Services.
