The Tribune-Star in Terre Haute reports the Clay County Board of Commissioners has voted to not accept responsibility for the Bowling Green bridge once a new span is built. It is expected to be moved to Brown County.
The publication says construction on a new bridge could begin as early as mid-2017. It would be located just south of the current span over the Eel River on Indiana 46 and cost nearly $10 million.
Plans call for the current bridge to be cut in half and relocated to Brown County along the Salt Creek Trail, which runs between the town of Nashville and Brown County State Park.
The steel truss span is more than 400 feet long and has two lanes. The Tribune-Star reports estimates for rehabbing the old bridge range from $3.3 million to $3.7 million, while moving it would be within the same price range.
