MTI Expanding in South Bend

South Bend-based Manufacturing Technology Inc. has more than doubled the space for its manufacturing services division with the purchase of a 127,000 square-foot facility. The company is planning to invest more than $1 million into renovations and around $2 million into new equipment over the next three years.
The building was previously-owned Masonite International Corp.’s Mohawk Door division.
MTI says the division designs and produces welded components for aerospace, automotive and medical device industry clients. Business Unit Manager for Manufacturing Services Mike Laiman says "this purchase allows MTI to expand our contract manufacturing capabilities. With 122,000 square feet of open production space, MTI is now well positioned for the capacity needs of our high volume customers."
As a result of the move, the company will consolidate some equipment from two other facilities into the new space and leave the space it’s leasing on Sample Street in the city. Renovations are slated to take three months and the equipment is expected to be moved in stages throughout the next year.
MTI says it received support for the move from the city and the state. The company has 180 workers at locations in South Bend, the United Kingdom and China. Its clients have included Boeing, General Electric, Rolls-Royce, Pratt and Whitney and Federal Mogul.
