Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc. (NYSE:SPG) is planning a multi-million dollar renovation at a northern Indiana shopping center. Improvements to the University Park Mall in Mishawaka are slated to get underway early next year and be complete before 2015. A Simon spokesman says it's the only project of this scale planned for the state. December 20, 2013

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – Simon Property Group, Inc. (NYSE:SPG), a global leader in retail real estate, announces its plans for a major renovation of University Park Mall beginning early 2014.

The exciting mall renovations will include new interior features and amenities such as additional seating, updated restrooms, new flooring and lighting and a new paint scheme. Dining Pavilion will also be redesigned and accommodate more guests. The project is expected is be complete prior to the 2014 holiday season.

“University Park Mall is a premiere retail destination for shoppers in Michiana,” said Irene McKiernan, director of marketing and business development for University Park Mall. “We want to continue to give shoppers in the area a fantastic place to shop, browse, dine or meet with other members of the community. This renovation will create a warm, modern feel and allow guests – especially families – to be even more comfortable during their visits with us.”

UNIVERSITY PARK MALL RENOVATION

Specific projects include:

-Renovation of existing restrooms and corridors;

-New family restrooms with additional rooms for nursing mothers;

-New paint and overall color scheme;

-New carpet and soft seating in major courts throughout the mall;

-New overhead lighting and light features;

-New tile flooring and flooring improvements;

-Overhead architectural changes; and

-Redesigned Dining Pavilion to seat 546 guests

“We believe this redesign will allow University Park Mall to become an even more popular location for local and national retailers,” said University Park Mall leasing representative Lorene Wright. “We have added over the last year two popular retailers, Michael Kors and Pandora, and look forward to the future possibilities and growth for the mall.”

The 922,000 square-foot mall, anchored by Macy's, JCPenney and Sears, originally opened in 1979. In 2008, the mall opened The Village at University Park Mall, a lifestyle component with additional retailers and restaurants including Barnes & Noble, Granite City Food and Brewery and ULTA.
