Lubbers: Good News For College Readiness, Completion Figures
Indiana Higher Education Commissioner Teresa Lubbers says the state is moving in the right direction on multiple key metrics. Lubbers says on-time degree completion is on the rise and remediation rates for college students are down. All trends in two and four-year institutions, Lubbers says “look good,” but she stresses there is work to be done. The overall goal, she says, remains helping all students complete degrees, certificates and credentials, emphasizing a "full-range of options."
In an interview on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Lubbers said the needs of the workforce continue to play a key role for Hoosier students and post-secondary institutions. "When you hear me say college, think quality degrees and credential beyond high school and the alignment of those credentials with the world of work," she said. "We talk to employers on a daily basis about what their needs are and we try to make sure students — both those graduating from high school and those returning adults — understand what is needed in the economy today."
The most recent figured from the state shows 38.5 percent of Hoosier college students graduate on-time, a nearly 14 percent increase from five years ago. The 2018 College Readiness Report indicates 13 percent of high school graduates needed remediation in college, down from 28 percent in 2012.
