News Release

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Following a national search, Chris J. Foley has been appointed Indiana University assistant vice president and director of the Office of Online Education, IU Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs John S. Applegate has announced.

Foley has nearly 18 years of experience working on IU’s Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses. Since 2007, he has served as director of undergraduate admissions for Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Before that position, he spent 10 years at Indiana University Bloomington, where he was chief of operations for undergraduate admissions and director of international admissions.

As director of online education, Foley will lead a growing office that serves students and promotes learning through high-quality online programs, providing leadership, management and coordination of online education across all IU campuses. IU Online, established in 2012, also provides strategic oversight of online education activities, maintains a portal of online education offerings and interacts with state agencies that influence online education.

Foley’s appointment is effective March 1.

“I’m very pleased that Chris Foley has accepted this important appointment,” Applegate said. “With his extensive experience, he will bring innovative recruitment strategies and a systems perspective to the Office of Online Education. His leadership of the Shared Services Initiative for admissions demonstrated an ability to work collaboratively with all IU campuses to achieve the university’s goals and objectives.”

“Chris has a strong background and a national reputation in recruitment and admissions,” said Barbara Bichelmeyer, executive associate vice president for university academic and regional campus affairs. “He has a deep understanding of the demographics and profiles of IU students and detailed knowledge of the systems and operations that support them. I am confident that he will lead the university through a period of great growth in online enrollment.”

“I’m excited to lead the Office of Online Education for Indiana University,” Foley said. “This is a great opportunity to augment the strengths of all IU campuses. IU already has a significant and growing presence in online education, and it will be rewarding to build on these initial successes.”

As director of undergraduate admissions at IUPUI, Foley implemented a national student recruitment plan that resulted in a 34 percent increase in the size of the freshman cohort while improving academic preparation and diversity. Foley also led the admission and recruitment of external transfer, inter-campus transfer, returning and visiting students at IUPUI, establishing and administering admission standards for those students.

He led the campus’s implementation team for the Shared Services Initiative, which consolidated back-office operations of student services units across the entire IU system. The project included harmonizing policies and business practices, implementing technology and other systems-level coordination.

He holds an Ed.D. degree from the IU School of Education, master’s degrees from IU in English and creative writing, and a B.A. from the University of Arkansas. He has taught courses on leadership, ethics and organizational change in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI.
