Barcelona, Spain — The City of Indianapolis today received the international “E-Visionary” award from the World Electric Vehicle Association. The group honored the City and Mayor Ballard for efforts to expand electric mobility and reduce the U.S. dependence on oil during its 27th Annual Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exhibition (EVS27). Previous winners include: Los Angeles, Lisbon, Seoul and Seattle.
“This marks the third time in the last six weeks Indy has received national or international acclaim for its innovative solutions to matters of local, national and global importance,” said Mayor Ballard. “It is gratifying that others are recognizing our efforts to improve global security by reducing the dominance that oil holds on our transportation sector.”
The E-Visionary Award is presented by the World Electric Vehicle Association (WEVA) to cities and regions for initiatives to promote the use of electric vehicles. Last year, Mayor Ballard signed an executive order mandating all municipal fleet vehicles operate on electric, plug-in hybrid, compressed natural gas or domestically produced fuel sources by 2025. The City is also partnering with the Bollor? Group to launch the largest all-electric car share program in the U.S. next year.
“Mayor Ballard is working tirelessly to free Indianapolis, and our nation, from a crippling dependence on a monopoly fuel. He is pioneering innovative solutions for his city’s transportation needs, and it is a tremendous honor for me to present Indianapolis with this E-Visionary award during EVS27,” said Brian Wynne, president of the Electric Drive Transportation Association.
Last week, Mayor Greg Ballard was recognized by the League of American Bicyclists with the Bicycle Friendly America Leadership award for his vision to transform Indianapolis into one of the nation’s best cities for cyclists. In October, the National Parking Association named Mayor Ballard “Innovator of the Year” for improving customer convenience and increasing city revenue through Indy’s parking meter modernization.
