Indy Airport Topples Two Monthly Records

The IAA says the effort aims to showcase local foods

Passenger traffic at Indianapolis International Airport reached record highs during two months in the first quarter. More passengers traveled through IND in January and March than ever before and the total number of passengers boarding planes in Indianapolis in February also rose compared to the same month a year earlier.

In all, first quarter passenger traffic increased by 8 percent over the same period in 2017. Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez says seat capacity also jumped 6 percent, adding "it’s further testament that people realize you can get there from Indy – and that’s valuable in a dynamic way to economic growth."

Five new nonstop routes — Austin, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Savannah and Seattle — were added during the first quarter, which Rodriguez says helped boost airline seat miles by 12 percent. An all-time record number of nonstop destinations — 51 — are served by IND.

The state’s busiest airport set a passenger traffic record last year with 8.77 million travelers. IND says it averages 145 flights per day.
