The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded more than $5 million in grants to the Indianapolis Airport Authority through the Airport Improvement Program. The airport says the funding will support projects including taxiway and runway rehabilitation, as well as lighting technology modernization.

The authority tells Inside INdiana Business the work will help "maintain and preserve the airport as part of ensuring its continued public value."

The largest portion of the funding, nearly $3.1 million, will be used to patch, seal and replace aging sections of the airport’s taxiway. A $1 million grant will support engineering, surveying and other services for rehabilitation of a runway, taxiways, lighting and signage. Nearly $1 million will go toward replacing incandescent taxiway lighting with LED technology and improving the power distribution system.

Last week, South Bend International Airport was awarded more than $1.3 million through the same FAA program for terminal improvements. Several Indiana airports we also awarded AIP funding earlier this month.
