Fort Wayne, Ind. — Recognized for efforts to improve productivity, increase operational effectiveness and save taxpayers money, the City of Fort Wayne Fleet Department places 7th on the list of the 100 Best Government Fleets for 2013.
The award presented by Government Fleet magazine and sponsored by INVERS Mobility Solutions, recognizes peak performing public sector fleets from cities, school districts, counties, states, and federal government operations in North America. The announcement is in the magazine's July issue.
“Having an efficient operation to maintain our City vehicles is critical to productivity and saves the City money. By keeping vehicles like police, fire, street, water and sewer vehicles in excellent repair and trucks in top operating condition, we reduce down-time and extend the life of the vehicles,” said Public Works Director, Bob Kennedy. “Our investment into fleet management is money well spent and I'm proud that our fleet staff operates in an effective manner.”
For fleet manager Larry Campbell, national recognition of Fort Wayne’s innovative and efficient program is not new. Fort Wayne has made the Top 100 List every year since 2005. In 2012, Fort Wayne was 19th on the list and Campbell was named public sector Fleet Manager of the Year by the Fleet Counselor Services and the Government Fleet Management Alliance.
Over the last 10 years the City's Fleet Department has implemented a consistent maintenance schedule, reduced turnaround time on vehicle repairs, and implemented cost saving measures such as hybrid and electric vehicles and the use of alternative fuels — E85, EVs and B20. Further cost saving measures included upgrading to energy efficient lighting, windows and heating units in the maintenance garage.
Last year the Fleet Department installed LED lights above outdoor fuel islands which reduced energy usage by 77% annually. Additionally, lighting improvements in the garage reduced energy costs, saving the City more than $10,000.
Besides Fort Wayne placing 7th on the list, two other Indiana communities made the Top 100 — Indianapolis 63rd, and Fishers 83rd.
