Holcomb Slated to Sign Sunday Alcohol Sales Bill
Governor Eric Holcomb will sign into law Wednesday one of the most high-profile pieces of legislation in this year’s General Assembly. Senate Enrolled Act 1 permits Hoosier retailers to sell carryout alcohol on Sundays. The signing sets the stage for carryout sales to begin this Sunday.
A turning point for the measure came late last year when the Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers and the Indiana Retail Council announced they would support the long-debated change in Indiana law. During The INsiders on Inside INdiana Business with Gerry Dick, Visit Indy Vice President Chris Gahl and financial planner Peter Dunn weighed in on the effects of the shift.
Bills signed into law by the governor generally go into effect July 1. Along the way an amendment was added and approved that calls for it to be active once it’s signed by Holcomb.
- authored by Senator Ron Alting (R-22).
- approved by Senate Committee on Public Policy.
- cleared by full Senate by a 39-10 vote.
- moved to the House with Representative Ben Smaltz (R-52) as sponsor.
- approved by House Committee on Public Policy.
- approved by full House by a vote of 82-10.
- Senate concurred with House amendments 38-10.
Sunday carryout sales was also the focus of a special commission last year that recommended legislative approval. Wednesday’s closed ceremony at the Governor’s Office in the Indiana Statehouse will be streamed live by the state. Leaders expected to be in attendance include Holcomb, Alting, Smaltz, as well as Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch, House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-88) and Senate President Pro Tem David Long (R-16).
