TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (August 7, 2014) – Medical students from Indiana University School of Medicine-Terre Haute, in collaboration with other area college health professional students, will open a free student outreach clinic at the Landsbaum Center for Health Education in Terre Haute, Ind. The public is invited to participate in tours and a presentation about the clinic from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8.
The Mollie R. Wheat Memorial Clinic will provide health and wellness screenings, primary care services, lab testing and referrals to existing local health care resources. The clinic will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays beginning Aug. 9.
The mission of the clinic is to expand access to basic medical screenings for underserved and underinsured patients in the Wabash Valley and to provide professional students from multiple disciplines with learning experiences in the clinical setting. It offers 10 fully equipped exam rooms, a conference room, a receptionist area and a large waiting area.
Professional students from the IU School of Medicine, Indiana State University School of Nursing and Health and Human Services, as well as other area college health professional students, will work side-by-side practicing their decision-making skills, exploring issues related to medical administration and broadening their understanding of the delivery of health care to vulnerable populations.
The clinic is named in honor of 2013 IU School of Medicine graduate John Wheat's mother, Mollie Wheat, who battled cancer for 11 years before passing away in 2013. Student leaders envisioned her positive attitude and energy as a guide for the clinic's mission.
Several local organizations are supporting the clinic’s efforts, including Union Hospital Foundation; the Center for Health, Wellness and Life Enrichment at Indiana State University; West Central Indiana Area Health Education Center; GenPath; and Wabash Valley Community Foundation.
