The city of Fort Wayne has put forth a proposal to pump $3 million annually into park projects. The planned upgrades include park amenities, athletic court improvements and building renovations.

News Release

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Mayor Tom Henry today was joined by members of the Parks & Recreation Department, elected officials, and community and neighborhood leaders to applaud the planned improvements the public will see in the City’s Parks system.

Today's announcement was made possible by the leadership of Mayor Henry’s Administration, the Fiscal Policy Group, neighborhood and business leaders, and the members of City Council who supported and passed a financial plan for the future that provides $3 million in annual funding to assist with maintenance and improvement projects at Parks facilities without having to borrow money.

Highlights of planned improvements in 2014:

*Hamilton Park Splash Pad

*Additional restroom in Shoaff Park

*Resurface/repair projects – first year of ten year plan to resurface and/or repair roadways, parking lots, tennis courts and basketball courts in the Parks system

*Annual tree replacement/treatment program

*Phase One – Diehm Museum Pavilion renovation

“By investing in our future, we’re demonstrating a commitment to a great quality of life that's sustainable and positions us for success,” said Mayor Henry. “Children, families, and neighborhoods benefit by having a Parks system that provides tremendous recreational, educational, and social opportunities for growth and development. I continue to be encouraged by the positive momentum in the City of Fort Wayne.”

“This dedicated annual funding will enable us to continue our stewardship of the community's parklands, facilities and public trees entrusted to our care,” said Parks & Recreation Director Al Moll. “And as part of our operating model, we solicit some level of private matching funds for projects.”

Today's announcement continues a series of success stories resulting from the City's proactive approach to meeting the needs of citizens. Earlier this month, the Fire Department announced a hiring initiative to add 15 new firefighters, and the Police Department announced 20 new police officers will be hired.
