Dugger School Rises Again
A school in the Wabash Valley in danger of closing is getting another chance. Grace College in Winona Lake will sponsor Dugger Union School Corp. as a charter school. Last year, it operated as an Indiana Cyber Charter School after the Northeast School Corp. board in Sullivan County made the difficult decision in 2013 to close it. Grace College School of Professional and Online Education Dean Tim Ziebarth helped deliver the news Wednesday to a crowded gymnasium that Dugger Union will be ready for classes in August. Community and school leaders, volunteers and a consultant spent last year crafting a plan to bring to charter sponsors.
Ziebarth says Union presented a strategy that will “foster, engage and support” the students as they work toward the next level of careers, education or training.
Ziebarth emphasizes Grace College does not wish to disrespect previous decisions made by past administrators to close Union. He adds there is “lots of work to be done” for the current crop of leaders before the school year begins.
Grace College sponsors one other charter school in the state.
