DePauw Buys Movie Theater

DePauw University has purchased Greencastle’s only movie theater. Ashley Square Cinema will be operated by a family-owned Clay County company, and will continue to show two movies per night and accommodate special events.
Jagama Corp., operated by Mark, Gayla and Evan Thiemann of Brazil, will operate the theater. The company owns and operates the Walnut Theater in Brazil and has run various theaters in Terre Haute over the last 28 years.
Ashley Square Cinema opened in 1984, showing Cannonball Run II and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. It was recently upgraded with Barco digital projectors. The school says the theater will continue to host special screenings including DePauw Film Studies events, which are free and open to the public.
DePauw Director of Collaborative Community Initiatives and Auxiliary Services Bruce Clute says the venue "serves an important role in the community and has been, frankly, an underutilized asset."
