The chief executive officer of Indianapolis-based DEFENDER believes the company's streamlined focus on security and smart home technology can help it become a billion-dollar business. The company has sold three subsidiaries to Carmel-based WCA Group LLC, exiting the heating, air conditioning and plumbing sector. The sale of Indianapolis-based Williams Comfort Air and Mr. Plumber, Thomas & Galbraith Heating Cooling and Plumbing in Cincinnati and Louisville-based Jarboe's Plumbing Heating and Cooling involves nearly 300 workers.

Boyce says DEFENDER still employs around 600 in Indiana.

He says the company is “doubling down” on home security and automation, which has been growing nationwide.

DEFENDER acquired Williams Comfort Air and Mr. Plumber in 2012 and Thomas & Galbraith and Jarboe's in 2013 as part of a move at that time to continue to diversify.

In 2011, DEFENDER launched a whole division dedicated to heating, cooling and plumbing called True Home.
