Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) will showcase two new engines on Thursday that the company says make up a "game-changing platform." The 2017 X-15 series is designed to deliver more power and be more efficient than previous models. The release comes at an important time for the global manufacturer.

Earlier this week, Cummins reported a second quarter profit of $406 million, compared to $471 a year earlier. The dip was attributed to a 10 percent decrease in global revenues, driven by lower North American production.

In May, the company detailed a high-profile reorganization effort. Cummins announced it was combining its Power Generation and High Horsepower units to form the Power Systems Segment. Later that month, Cummins also unveiled a lineup of engines for the transit market.

The new X-15 engines are slated to be available for customers September 26.
