Dirt will be moved soon on a major housing project in Northwest Indiana that has been two years in the making. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report ground will be broken next week for The Lakes of Valparaiso, a $50 million plan to build more than 400 luxury apartments. Developer Don Weiss says the project will provide a category of housing that is currently unavailable in the area.

He says the living space is appealing to those who don’t want to own a home, but are looking for high-end amenities.

The Lakes of Valparaiso will have pedestrian and bike paths and an existing forest that spans more than four acres will remain.

The first apartments should be ready in 2015.
