Consolidation to Affect Norfolk Southern Fort Wayne Facility

A Fort Wayne rail operations facility will be handling additional dispatching responsibility following a consolidation decision by Virginia-based Norfolk Southern Corp. (NYSE: NSC). The company says it will close its Central Division headquarters in Knoxville and divide the work between facilities in Allen County, Alabama and Illinois.
Norfolk Southern says 50 workers in Tennessee will be affected by the move. It says the number of operating divisions is now nine and displaced dispatchers will have an opportunity to seek a transfer or apply for vacant jobs at the company. Administrative and clerical workers from the closed division will have to apply for openings elsewhere.
NS says the closure will not affect yard and field operations in Knoxville. The Norfolk Southern Railway Co. subsidiary has a presence in 22 states and the District of Columbia, operating some 19,500 route miles.
