The City of Anderson Redevelopment Commission has approved the transfer of the iconic Wigwam to a private group aiming to revive the aging gymnasium. Wigwam Sports & Entertainment LLC is expected to complete the transaction by July 8th. Our partners at the Herald-Bulletin report the move saves the building from demolition. WSE needed to line up $600,000 from private investors in order to meet commission requirements.

The building had been owned by the Anderson Community School Corp., which shuttered the 1960s-era gym in 2011 due to budget constraints.

Early this week, Anderson Schools approved $100,000 to help push the deal forward.

The city is considering using tax revenues to fund a long-term use agreement with the new owners.
