Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA) is detailing plans to launch more than 80,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in several Indiana cities. The technology will be turned on this summer in Fort Wayne, followed by other markets including Indianapolis, Lafayette and Bloomington. May 19, 2014

News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Hoosiers and visitors alike across Indiana will soon be able to access more than 80,000 Xfinity WiFi hotspots as Comcast begins rolling out Wi-Fi access points in Indiana this month. Fort Wayne will be the first market in Indiana to launch this new service by lighting up 13,000 hotspots by early summer. The communities of Lafayette, Bloomington, Kokomo and Indianapolis will also launch in the coming weeks.

“Having the largest Wi-Fi network in the region and the nation is a major benefit for our customers, who are turning to Wi-Fi more than ever because they want high-speed 24/7 access to their TV, communications, home security and automation and other Xfinity services on the go,” said Larry Williamson, vice president of operations in Indiana for Comcast. “These 80,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across Indiana will allow Xfinity customers and non-customers alike to access their favorite TV shows and movies and manage other mobile tasks, such as email, social media and web surfing, without eating into their wireless data plans.”

With additional hotspots coming online daily nationwide, Xfinity Internet customers now have access to more than one million Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the U.S. in neighborhoods, at various business locations and other places where individuals spend time working, commuting, shopping, dining and more. By the end of 2014, Comcast expects to reach 8 million hotspots nationwide.

Finding the nearest Xfinity WiFi hotspot

Most Xfinity Internet customers can access Xfinity WiFi hotspots, at no additional charge, by selecting “xfinitywifi” from the list of available networks on their laptops or mobile devices and enter their Comcast ID or email and password. After the initial sign in, customers will be automatically connected to the network whenever they are in a hotspot location. It is easy to locate business and outdoor hotspots by downloading the Xfinity WiFi App, available on iOS and Android devices, or visit the hotspot finder map on www.xfinity.com/wifi.

The network consists of:

Xfinity WiFi Hotspots in Business Locations – Most Comcast Business Internet customers are eligible to receive an Xfinity WiFi hotspot for no additional charge when they order service. This is a value-added feature that directly improves their patrons' experience. Examples include restaurants, caf?s and bakeries, retail establishments and office waiting rooms.

Xfinity WiFi Neighborhood Hotspots: Recently, Comcast began providing residential customers with Xfinity Wireless Gateways that provide the ability to have a second “xfinitywifi” signal (or SSID) in their home. This signal is separate and distinct from their private and secure home Wi-Fi. This second signal provides visiting Xfinity Internet customers and non-customers Wi-Fi access without the need to use the homeowner's private network and password.
