Indianapolis-based Citizens Energy Group has named Joseph Sutherland director of government and external affairs. He previously served as president and managing director for utility industry consultant Utilitus LLC. July 9, 2014

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Citizens Energy Group announced today that Joseph Sutherland has been named Director, Government and External Affairs effective July 28. Sutherland comes to Citizens from Utilitus LLC where he served as President and Managing Director.

In his new role, Sutherland will be responsible for developing effective relationships and communicating with state and local elected officials and other key stakeholders.

Sutherland has more than 19 years of experience in all aspects of state utility regulation. Prior to his work with Utilitus, Sutherland had a 17-year career at the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission where he served in positions of increasing responsibility including Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director for Governmental Affairs.

“Joe Sutherland's extensive knowledge of utility industry regulation and his ability to build effective relationships with elected officials will be great assets in his new position at Citizens,” said Carey Lykins, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Sutherland, who has a bachelor of science in business from Indiana University, is a member of the American Water Works Association, the Government Affairs Society of Indiana, and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Water Advisory Council.
